The origins of Valentine's Day are somewhat mysterious and steeped in legend. One popular theory traces the holiday back to St. Valentine, a Christian martyr who was executed on February 14th in the 3rd century. According to legend, St. Valentine was a priest who defied Emperor Claudius II's decree banning marriages for young men, believing that single men made better soldiers. Valentine continued to perform marriages in secret and was eventually imprisoned and executed for his defiance. While in prison, he is said to have sent a love letter to a young woman, signing it "From your Valentine," a phrase still in use today.
